By Shuyi Wang * The story was published in JSONS jsons.org/boston/aline-smithson-and-her-mother-series-1.2877988 6/15/12 When Aline Smithson began her photographic journey more than 12 years ago, she didn’t expect her work would be presented in galleries across the country and published throughout the world. One of Smithson’s best known works, Arrangement in Green and Black: Portrait of the Photographer’s Mother Series, was exhibited in the second annual Flash Forward Festival Boston June 7 - 10, where she spoke about her photography, her inspiration and her support of emerging artists. "It's great fun. It's very carefully thought out. Every picture delivers a little surprise," said Carry Wolinsky, consulting director of the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University, after seeing Smithson's work in the exhibition. One day at a garage sale, Smithson found a small print of James Abbott Whistler's painting Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter’s Mother. The same weekend, she found a leopard coat and hat, a 1950s cat painting, and a chair that looked like the one in Whistler’s painting. She got the inspiration of doing the portraiture with her mother, who was thrilled to become her model for the photographs and spend some time having fun with her daughter, Smithson said. Smithson hand painted the finished photos to “have the viewer see the work in a historical context with the addition of color, and at the same time, experience Whistler’s simple, yet brilliant formula for the composition, “ she wrote in her introduction to the series. Smithson’s 85-year-old mother passed away before seeing the finished the 21 ensembles she posed for and had no idea they would be published all over the world. “But I have a feeling she knows,” Smithson said, laughing.
